Quebec experienced one of its worst disasters in recent memory nearly a month ago today. A train derailed in the center of Lac-Megantic, exploding and destroying dozens of buildings. Fifteen people died, many people were injured and the loss of property was significant.

Investigators are focusing on how the brakes were released as the train was parked in a town kilometers away. Inspector Forget said investigators had ruled out terrorism as a motive for the attack but that several other options, including criminal negligence were still open to investigation.

He warned it could take time before the investigation findings emerge.

İngilizce Dersleri: article synopsis

In this İngilizce Dersleri we focus on a very recent Turkish phenomenon, the export of Turkish television to the Arab world. Over the last five years, there has been a significant increase in foreign sales of Turkish drama television. In 2007, a mere $1m was made from export of Turkish television. In 2012, the same figure was $130m. One of the interesting consequences of this export is that Muslim viewers from more conservative societies than Turkey, are seeing images of alcohol and pre-marital relationships.

One example of such shows is Magnificent Century (Muhtesem Yuzyil). Set in the Ottoman world, it tells the story of Suleiman the Magnificent, the longest reigning Sultan, and his love for a Western woman in his harem. It looks back at 500 years to the era when Turkish Sultans ruled much of the Balkans and the Middle East. It has been exported to 47 countries mostly from these former Ottoman regions.

The rise of Turkey’s entertainment export market is sure to increase Turkey’s regional cultural status.

As always, let us know your thoughts on this version of the İngilizce Dersleri episode!

We usually like to cover topics that are of particular interest to our Turkish students learning English. For this article we chose to take a break from Turkish subject matter. This article focuses on an international incident between the government of the United States and Mongolia. The two nations co-operated by returning a stolen artifact from the US back to Mongolia, its original home.

The 70-million-year-old dinosaur skeleton found in the Gobi Desert on a joint Russion-Mongolian mission was smuggled to the United States in pieces. The skeleton was then auctioned for more than $1 million, and was returned on Monday by the U.S. government to Mongolia.

Eric Prokopi sold the skeleton at a Manhattan auction last spring for $1.05 million. Mongolia demanded the return of the 8-foot-tall (2.4 meter), 24-foot-long (7.3 meter) skeleton. Mongolian President Tsakhia Elbegdorj thanked U.S. prosecutors, judges, investigators and paleontologists in a statement: “Our two countries are separated by many miles, but share a passion for justice and a commitment to putting an end to illegal smuggling.”

We hope that you enjoyed a departure from our typical İngilizce Dersleri subject matter. If there are any vocabulary topics that you would like us to cover in our İngilizce Dersleri series, let us know!

(Tepav 2011)

The figure above, in which the black dots represent the urban population density, reveals that in the twelfth century, the population centered around Sultanahmet and that the density did not increase significantly for 650 years. By 2008 the city has grown monstrously. Istanbul is the fastest growing city among all OECD metropolises in the period after the 1990s.

Istanbul Urban Area: 1950 to 2010

In the picture above, we can see the immense growth that has taken place in Istanbul over the last 60 years. The red line shows the urban population boundaries in 1950, centered around the golden horn and the lower Bosphorus. The green line shows the extent of Istanbul urban development by 2010. İngilizce Dersleri: article synopsis

The article focuses on a recently published study regarding the relationship between a person’s socioeconomic and geographical conditions, and their time dedicated to exercise. The article states that people of lower socioeconomic class and less favorable climatic conditions (cold / rain) exercise less. The article also briefly touches upon the relationship between the London 2012 Olympics and the increase in “grassroots” sport participation.

You can find a copy of the article on the BBC website here.

Relevance for Turkish Students?

As you may be aware, Istanbul is bidding to host the 2020 Olympic games. We created a previous İngilizce Dersleri video article about the Istanbul Olympic bid, that you can find here. Istanbul is bidding against Tokyo and Madrid. The winner of the bid will be decided on September 7th 2013 in Buenos Aires. When a country hosts a Summer Olympics, a spotlight is created around the state of sports and fitness in the country. Typically, the host country will dedicate a budget to building up community sports facilities across the country to create an “Olympic legacy”. If Istanbul is successful in its bid, the world’s attention will be on sport in Turkey.

Please give us your thoughts! Do Turks get enough exercise? How would you like to see the culture of sport improved in Turkey? Do you think a successful bid for Istanbul 2020 could help accelerate sport across the country?
