  • How do I try a class out, and see if TurksLearnEnglish.com is for me?

    Easy, we offer all new students a 30-minute private session for just $2.

    Your native English teacher will talk with you about your English goals and skills. The teacher will also prepare you a written plan designed to help you achieve your goals.

    Set up an account here, all you need is an email address or your Facebook log in. Then click on Ders Almak, and select Adult English Class Credits to purchase your 30-minute private teacher session.

    Once you’ve made the purchase, go to Ders Katılmak to enrol in a private teacher session at a time convenient for you.

  • How do I enter the virtual classroom once I’ve signed up for a class?

    You receive the information to attend the virtual classroom by email once you enroll. The email contains a link to the virtual classroom.

    For your first lesson we recommend clicking on the link at least 10 minutes before your class. This way, you can test your microphone and speakers and get comfortable with the virtual classroom environment.

  • Do I need a headset?

    The minimum requirement to join a class is a decent Internet connection, with built-in speakers and a microphone on the laptop. Most recently purchased computers/laptops come with built-in speakers and microphones. You can also use a tablet.

    Students who use a headset focus better during the lessons as all background noise is blocked out and their voices become clear.

  • My laptop/tablet doesn’t have a webcam. Can I still join?

    Sure. You don’t have to have a camera, though it’s easier to learn a language when you can also see the gestures of the teacher and other students and they can see you!

  • Can I leave other programs running on my computer?

    We advise you not to download or stream anything during lesson time, as we need a decent amount of bandwidth for the videoconferencing.

  • I have a dial-up Internet connection. Will this be suitable for the lessons?

    No. Dial-up is not strong enough to deal with the videoconferencing bandwidth.

  • I have problems with sound.

    Sound is the most common technical issue people encounter during online lessons. Dropouts can be frustrating.

    We always recommend that you arrive at your lesson at least 5 minutes early to sort out sound issues (10 minutes for your first lesson). If you’re having sound issues, which of the following is it?

    1. I get feedback / distortion

    Keep a decent distance away from your computer. We find that people who get too close to their webcam sometimes have noise distortion and issues with sound quality.

    Make sure no other electronic devices are near. Remove phones, tablets and radios away from your computer.

    2. My headset isn’t working

    In Windows open the “Control Panel” and then under “Sound” click “Manage audio devices”. Ensure the sound device you want to use (i.e. headphones/headset) is set as the default.

    In Apple / IOS go to your “System Preferences”, under hardware click “Sound” and make sure both your input and output sounds are turned up and not muted. On the input section you can try speaking into your headset or built-in microphone, if the headset or built in microphone is working, the blue bars under the input volume will light up as you speak.

  • How many students are in each class?

    At present we allow a maximum of 6 students in each class (4 for Young Learner classes).

  • How many classes can I sign up for in advance?

    You can enroll in as many classes as you want, to the maximum of the class credits you have purchased. In fact, we encourage you to sign up and reserve your place as soon as possible.

  • The class I want to attend is full. What can I do?

    We limit the number of students in each class to ensure that each student has a real opportunity to participate. If you can’t enroll in classes because they are full, why not send some feedback so we can do our best to add more classes at the levels and times you’re looking for.

  • How do I cancel my reservation in a class?

    You can cancel your reservation in a class here. You can cancel up to 4 hours before the class commences and we will refund the class credit. If you enroll in a class that commences in under 4 hours, your account will automatically be deducted a credit, and you won’t be able to get a refund if you do not attend.

  • How long are my class credits valid for?

    Class credits expire after one full calendar year. So don’t worry, you have plenty of time to use them!

  • What happens if I don’t use all of the classes I paid for?

    You have a year, we’re sure that you’ll be able to use them within the time period!

  • Are the classes in British or American English?

    All our teachers are native English speakers. Our teachers come from all the major English-speaking regions including America, Canada and England.

    In today’s world it is no longer realistic to aim for either American or British English. Far more people speak English as a second language so it’s important that you try to understand all native accents.

  • Is it ok to log in late? Or to log out early?

    Sure. We understand that things happen outside your control, though please note if you log in late or leave the lesson early you still use a full class credit.

  • How can I communicate privately with the teacher during the lesson?

    Use the instant message facility on the videoconferencing software to communicate privately with the teacher. The chat function allows you to chat with just the teacher, or with the entire class.

  • Is it ok to leave my phone switched on?

    It’s better to turn your phone off so there are no distractions.

    If you need to leave it on please turn the volume down, and if you need to take a call during the lesson, use the mute button on the videoconferencing software to keep your phone call private. Remember, you’re logged into a 10-person classroom!

  • How can I keep in touch with other students?

    Use the chat system on the videoconferencing software to contact other students individually. It’s a great idea to make friends online who are also improving their English!

  • Self-Assessment: Why reading?

    Reading is the best way to ensure you understand words in context. Multiple-choice assessments are defective because you can obtain correct answers by guessing.

  • Why does my self-assessment level from your site differ from other assessments of my English?

    The level title is not important. We only use it to determine which classes you should enroll in. What’s important is that you are in a class with other students who are at or close to your level.

  • How will I know when I am ready for a higher level?

    When you reach the point where you should advance to a higher level, our teachers will let you know either through the chat function during class or send you a message by email after class. Then you can enroll in higher-level classes.

  • How do I know my online payments are secure?

    Payment transactions take place via Bluefin Payment Systems, which meets the credit card industry’s highest security standard. They do this by storing and encrypting credit card numbers and billing information offsite, and backing up all our information daily.

  • Why don’t you offer payment by installments?

    We offer different package bundles (1, 5, 10 and 20 classes), so you can buy as many or as few classes as you want.

  • My credit card has been rejected. What can I do?

    Our site accepts all Turkish credit cards and international credit cards from North America, Europe and Australia. In some circumstances we can accept credit card payments through PayPal.

    Please send us a message here and we will coordinate a Paypal payment. For PayPal payments, we can only accommodate sales of 10 or 20 class packages. You do not need a PayPal account to make this form of payment, just a credit card.

  • My child is under 15 so how do I know this site is appropriate?

    Children have specific learning needs and styles. For this reason, we offer Young Learner classes designed for children under 15. There will be no adults in these classes.

    Naturally, it is necessary to provide a secure learning environment for everyone.

    We record each lesson and should you wish to review one that your child has attended, please contact us here and we will send it to you.

  • I want my child to join Young Learners classes.

    If a child under 13 wishes to join Young Learner classes, we require written approval from a parent or guardian.
